In all the weekend’s excitement (not to mention work…) I almost completely forgot to write something about Wales’s extraordinary run to the final of the Hong Kong sevens.
Wins over Australia and Argentina in the pool stage (as well as a heavy defeat to South Africa) saw Paul John’s side top the group, and they easily saw off first Canada in the quarterfinals and then top sevens side Kenya in the semis.
And when they led 19-0 over Fiji, themselves fresh from a comfortable win over reigning champions New Zealand, it seemed as if it would be a glorious triumph for Wales, the current world champions.
But Pacific islanders, the masters of the seven-a-side format, roared back after the break, scoring four unanswered tries to steal a 26-19 victory to seal their 14th Hong Kong title.
The sevens circuit moves on to the Prince Ichiban stadium in Japan this weekend, but Wales will be ruing missing a golden opportunity to win rugby sevens’ most prestigious title.
